THUMBS DOWN to the inadvertent and unscrupulous people who dumped four tons of old tires on Jimmy Hargrove’s fortune since last fall. Two illegal trash dumpings have been made the Charley Lane real estate, leaving Hargrove to clean up the mess. The state pitched in $300 from the N.C. Responsibility of Environment and Natural Resources to help dispose of the tires and we reckon the Alamance County Board of Commissioners should pitch in and adopt a conduct for a case-by-case review where trash is illegally dumped on seclusive property and how fees should be handled.

  THUMBS UP to the state’s harsher driving-while-impaired laws which went into at the end of the day Dec. 1, adding a $100 fine for every driver convicted of being impaired behind the vicinity, upping prison time for repeat DWI offenders and giving judges and magistrates the power to unsuitable those convicted of DWI wear continuous alcohol monitoring devices. It also increases the highest fine a drunken driver would pay, from $4,000 to $10,000. It’s dubbed Laura’s Law, for 17-year-old Laura Fortenberry who was killed in 2010 by a drunken driver with multiple DWI convictions. It’s an apt return and a good law.
